Teens age 12-18 with Down syndrome are welcome to sign up for these events. There is no charge for these events during the school year.

January 22, 2020: STARS Bowling at Park Lanes
Grab your shoes and bowling ball (if you have them) and come join us on the lanes. D

Get ready for an indoor snowball fight and dancing with your friends. Light refreshments will be provided.

 January 29, 2020: STARS Employment Basics Class

Teens will work learn important skills to prepare them for entering the workforce. a transition coordinator with 20 years of exeperience will lead the class as teens explore a variety of jobs, job skills, how to find a job and workplace habits to ensure success.

February 4, 2020: STARS Social Skills Escape Room 

Teens will meet at Lawrence Union Pacific Depot and work together using their social skills to breakout of an escape room. Snacks will be provided.

February 5th Career Exploration and Resume Writing

Teens will review jobs that are currently held by people with Down syndrome and learn more about how they prepared for the jobs they are in.  We will explore the world of work and how finding a job can be a job in itself. Whether the job you want is a volunteer position, part-time work, or a full-time career, job seeking requires lots of planning, organization, and dedication. In this session, we will be targeting the skills needed to kick-off a successful job search.  We will learn discuss the importance of networking like a pro and begin building our resumes.  This session will help teens prepare for our job fair and mock interviews on February 20th.

February 12th Job Interviews 101
An interview is your chance to convince an employer that you’re the best person for the job.  In this session, teens will continue to focus on developing our job seeking skills and learning how to nail the interview.  From what to wear to the interview to how to answer the first question, we will help you be prepared and feel more confident.   These activities will prepare our teens for the job fair and mock interviews being hosted at our STARS event on February 20th.

February 20th Job Fair and Mock Interviews at Sylvester Powell

Teens will have the opportunity to meet with local employers and to practice their interview skills at our job fair. Parents will stay onsite during the job fair and receive instruction on employment skills and options for adults with Down syndrome.

February 26th Hop Sports Fitness and Nutrition Class

Teens will participate in interactive fitness activities with video modeling and to learn more about nutrition, healthy portion sizes and setting good eating habits.
